“For the past eight years the Levant Hotel Pelekas, Corfu has been the base for the Australian operated Corfu Discovery Tour for Artists (above). The Levant Hotel has provided excellent accommodation and meals for the groups two week stay. Many of our tour members stated that the Levant Hotel with its tastefully decorated interior, personalized service and the hotels beautiful setting the best they have ever experienced. A perfect start to the day is breakfast on the kitchen garden terrace and culminating with dinner on the upstairs terrace watching sunset as the sun slides into the Adriatic. With only twenty four rooms the Levant provides the intimate quality of a boutique hotel where you are a valued guest not just a room number. Run as a family hotel this offers a relaxed accommodation and quality service that is fast disappearing with the pressures of large package tour operations.”
Warren Curry, Tour Operator, Corfu Discovery Tours.
“This family-run boutique hotel is in a superb setting overlooking the west coast with its majestic cliffs and superb long sandy beaches and the east amazing views of Corfu Town, most of the east coast and across to Greek mainland. We all spent a lot of time on the terrace especially at sunset – this was spectacular. Our group of seventeen Chamber Musicians from seven different countries ranged in age from retired to two delightful girls not yet in their teens. Everyone appreciated the exclusive and intimate ambience where one is a guest not a room number. The family became friends and nothing was too much trouble and we were all sorry to leave, especially the girls who were in floods of tears! The communal areas of the hotel have lovely paintings and antiques, reflecting the owner’s interest in history and culture. As several in our group were amateur musicians they were delighted to be able to play in the family chapel, a memorable experience. We never felt our music was a nuisance, quite the opposite. On some evenings while playing in one of the rooms off the terrace other guests would come and listen. We all enjoyed the wonderful home cooked meals with fresh local produce. I would thoroughly recommend the Levant.”
Vivienne Pittendrigh, Director, Chamber Music Holidays.
Sunset Restaurant
Corfiot cuisine is rich in the flavours of the Mediterranean. Our specialties consist of local ingredients found on the island and across Greece, especially olives, lemons, vegetables, and fish. Many of these dishes hark back to the days when cooks put all the ingredients in a single pot and left it to simmer all day.
Our menu does not just offer Greek cuisine, but also reflects the influences of its foreign rulers – namely the Venetians, French and British – as well as dishes from the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor.
Pastisada (beef cooked in a spiced tomato sauce), Sofrito (slices of beef cooked in a sauce of wine vinegar, garlic and parsley) and Stifado (rabbit and baby onion stew) all originated under Venetian rule, and equivalent recipes can be found in contemporary Italian cuisine.
Dishes from further east include Bourekakia (a typical Turkish appetiser), Soufiko (which originated in Anatolia but is now mainly associated with the Aegean island of Ikaria), Soutzoukakia (introduced into Greece in the early 20th century by refugees from Smyrna), Souvlaki (shish kebab), and, most notably Moussaka, variations of which are eaten throughout Greece, Turkey, the Balkans and the Middle East.
Finally, our customers get to try some of our traditional pastries, such as Baklava and Kataifi, both of which have also travelled to us from the east.
Kαλή όρεξη!
History
The hotel is located close to the western shore of Corfu, on the summit of Pelekas hill, with a panoramic view of the surrounding area and breath-taking sunrises and sunsets. Its unique location, rich history, and commitment to hospitality have attracted visitors for almost a century.
Of these visitors, probably the most famous were The Empress of Austria, popularly known as Sissi, as well as Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. Before Sissi built Achillion Palace in 1890 on Corfu’s east coast, she had tried to buy the land on which the Levant Hotel now stands. In fact, at one point, she actually bought the deeds from a local land owner – but it turned out that the land hadn’t been his to sell!
After Sissi’s assassination in 1898, Achillion was sold to Kaiser Wilhelm. He, too, fell in love with the view of the sunset from the summit of Pelekas and, when in Corfu, was driven from Achillion every evening to sit and watch the sun sink into the sea. This location is now known as “Kaiser’s Throne”, the best panoramic views in Corfu.
Close to the hotel is the Church of Evagelistria, built in the 15th century. The church has been restored and is the scene of an annual festival on 25 March.

Guests may choose from twenty-five single, double or double-suite family rooms, as well as six refurbished attic rooms, all decorated in traditional, modest Corfiot style, reflecting the owner’s interest in history, just like the communal areas of the hotel.
